Deciding to circumcise your baby boy

Here is some more information that I wish I would have had before Oreo was born. Circumcision for us was just a 'given' it was just what was done. We didn't question it, we just went with the flow. I remember asking Big D before Oreo's birth what he thought about getting it done, he replied "I dunno, it's up to you." To be honest now that I think about it, it wasn't up to either of us, it wasn't 'our' penis. I feel foolish for not researching the reasons why the procedure was even necessary. Turns out. It's not. I copied this information from the Dr. Sears website, its the most updated and myth depicting information I could find. I am curious as to why other parents decided to get their babies circumcised? Were you told some of the 'myths' listed below? Or were you like us and just did it because you thought it was the 'right' thing to do?

From the Website:
This is a decision that many parents face. There are many misconceptions and out-of-date information that parents may read. Here is a summary of the pertinent issues that you should consider when making this decision.

Medical benefits - THERE ARE NONE! Do not circumcise your baby because you think there are some medical benefits. A recent review by the American Academy of Pediatrics looked at all the data from the past decades to see if there truly were any medical benefits. Their conclusion - NO. There are no significant medical benefits that make circumcision worth doing. Here are a few benefits that we used to think were true, and now know are not.

Cleanliness - although it is true, a circumcised penis does not collect any white stuff underneath the foreskin like an intact penis does, THIS IS NOT A MEDICAL BENEFIT. It is really just one less area to wash in the shower.

Decreased risk of STD's - this was a myth that we now know is not true.

Decreased risk of penile cancer - it used to be thought that circumcised men had a much lower chance of cancer of the penis. We now know that this benefit is much smaller than previously thought. The AAP determined that this benefit is so tiny, it is not worth circumcising for this reason.

Avoiding infections in the foreskin - it is true, occasionally intact foreskins get irritated. This is easily treated with warms soaks and washing. Rarely, the irritated foreskin becomes infected. This requires antibiotics to clear up, but is easily treatable. Even if this does happen once or twice in a person's life, it is not a reason to circumcise at birth.

Avoiding the need to do it later on - very rarely, someone has a problem with recurrent infections in the foreskin that need antibiotic treatment. Some of these men then need to be circumcised in an operating room under general anesthesia. This is extremely rare, however, and is not a reason to circumcise everyone at birth.

Avoiding bladder infections - it used to thought that circumcised boys and men had a much lower chance of bladder infections. The AAP now knows that this benefit is very small, and is only true for the first few years of life. After that, there is no difference in the number of bladder infections. Again, not a reason to circumcise.

THEREFORE, IF YOU DECIDE TO CIRCUMCISE YOUR CHILD, DO NOT DO SO BECAUSE YOU THINK THERE IS ANY MEDICAL BENEFIT.

Religious reasons - some people choose to circumcise for religious or cultural reasons. This is a personal decision.

Don't want to be teased - while this may have been true in the U.S. decades ago, the truth is that your uncircumcised kids will be in good company in the locker room when they are teenagers. Less and less people in the U.S. are now circumcising their boys.

Too much trouble to take care of - some people think that an intact penis is too much trouble to pull back and clean, especially during childhood. Well, the truth is, you are not even supposed to pull back the foreskin until it naturally comes back on its own between age 3 years and adolescence. So there really isn't anything to even take care of until then.

Want your boy to look like dad - the main difference that your child will notice between him and dad is the hair. He won't even notice any difference in the penis until he is old enough that you can then explain to him the difference.

So, what are the reasons TO circumcise? Here is the list:

Religious reasons - as discussed above.

That is all. There really is no good reason to circumcise other that personal preference and religious reasons.

Are there any reasons NOT to circumcise? Consider these:

Leave nature alone - whether you believe God created men with a foreskin, or nature simply evolved this way, there must be some reason men have foreskins. Why change something that God/nature has created?

Sensation and sexual pleasure - the foreskin is filled with nerves, and is therefore extremely sensitive to touch. This enhances sexual pleasure.

Protects the glans (head) of the penis - the glans is another highly sensitive area. The foreskin protects the glans from constant rubbing and chaffing against clothing that can desensitize it over the years. This preserves sexual pleasure.

Ethical issues - there are groups of people worldwide, including medical societies, that oppose routine circumcision because they feel it is unethical for a parent to decide to alter the penis of their child without the child's consent. Parents who are deciding whether or not to circumcise their son may wish to consider the impact this may have in the future if the child decides they wish they were not circumcised.

So, when making this decision, the first thing to ask yourself is this - "Do I have any good reason to circumcise my baby?" If your answer is for religious reasons, then follow your faith. If not, and you can't think of any other significant reason other than just "because", then consider the above information as you make your decision.

cactus pear lemonade recipe

This is my favorite summertime drink! Cactus Pear Lemonade. I used to buy it from our local whole foods market but being a very curious and frugal mama I set out to create my own last summer. Good thing too because it turned out even better! If you've never tried a cactus pear now is the time, they are great in lemonade!

What You'll Need:
4 small lemons
3 cactus pears (I found mine at our local grocer)
Purified drinking water
Sugar (raw, or regular works)

1. Slice your lemons in half.
2. Cut the Cactus pear into cubes.
3. Peel the thick skin off of the cactus pears.
4. Place 1 cup of water into a medium sauce pan.
5. Turn the heat on low.
6. Drop in your cactus pear cubes.
7. Squeeze your lemon juice into the pan and scrape out some of the inside guts.
8. Add 1cup of sugar.
9. Let it simmer for 30-45 mins. stirring occasionally.
10. Turn the burner off and let cool.
11. Strain the mixture into a pitcher of 1.5-2 quarts of water.
(depending on how sweet you like your lemonade.)
12. Store it in the fridge and enjoy!

Hope you and your family enjoy this delicious treat!

our TTC journey so far

In Twitter lingo our TTC journey so far is a #FAIL. As well as my special diet I was trying. I did it for a few days and then crash, yep it all went down the drain. I'm not doing too horribly bad though, I'm still eating well and watching what I eat, it's just no to great extremes like the diet I was trying. AF has come and gone and a fresh cycle has started, what a great feeling. I always get super depressed once AF shows, and well during her entire stay, but when its over I feel like a whole new woman! I'm not joking, I convince myself each month that THIS is it, THIS is 'my' month. I stay positive, I let the universe support me, I repeat to myself 'I am fertile, I am open...Come on already damn it!' Sorry about the last part, this TTC thing is very frustrating. At a time when I am supposed to be most relaxed and at ease my body goes haywire on me and wont let me sleep or stop stressing about making a baby. *sigh* "It will come" they say.
Just be patient.
Yes, patience.
Something I've always had a hard time with.

O Hans, you speak to my soul.

how to enter a blog giveaway

This post is long overdue. I've been meaning to help my readers enter my giveaways by typing out the steps and explaining what some of them entail. If I missed something please let me know. This will also be listed in the 'Giveaways' page located at the top of the blog! I should also mention these steps pertain to when I use the google docs form. Which I plan on using from here on out for the rest of my giveaways. We are all super busy people and I've gotten enough feedback from readers stating that this is the quickest easiest way to enter! I might sneak some old 'comment' entry giveaways in from time to time too. We'll see.

How To Enter A Giveaway On The Luvs Jurn3 Blog:
The first three questions on the form are almost always required.
Fill in your First Name

Your E-mail Address

Then follow the Main required Entry that follows the first two questions.

These will often ask you to visit the sponsors website or answer a question about the sponsors products.
Now. The next questions will ask you if you are a follower or fan on twitter and face book.

If you do not have an account with these social networking sites, go get one! What are you waiting for, they are great resources to get out there and learn all about your favorite products and people!

The next few questions will ask you to do the same for the sponsored products fan pages, newsletters, or special online groups. Those links will be provided in the sponsored post!

If you are a twitter follower you get an extra shot at winning by ‘tweeting’ daily. There is an extra box located on the form. Please fill out your name and e-mail address, add an * into the third required question and then check the box ‘I Tweeted’ to earn your extra entry. boogie wipes review and giveaway

Before Oreo was born I always wondered why some parents were too lazy to wipe their kids nose. Turns out it wasn't out of laziness it was about a never ending battle between child, parent, and tissue! Every parent can relate to the swift and whiny head turn once you zoom in towards their face with a tissue. It's amazing how early kids learn this move! It was such a relief to try out Boogie Wipes during Oreos winter cold. His nose was running non-stop and it was great not to see his little nose suffer from dry regular tissues. The Boogie wipes worked great for those days that his nose would run a little and then dry on the outer nostril. A quick swipe and they were gone! No rough rubbing or tantrum throwing, on both our parts!

Straight From The Source:
Boogie Wipes are made with saline to dissolve boogies (mucus) caused by the common cold, allergies or otherwise booger-filled kid moments. Extra soft and scented in Great Grape, Fresh Scent or Magic Menthol (for extra stuffy noses) Boogie Wipes are recommended by Pediatricians as a gentle, effective alternative to a dry tissue. Available at 40,000 Retail locations in the US & Canada Including; Walmart, Target, Sam's Club, Rite Aid, Walgreens, Toys R Us and Babies R Us.

music to my ears

I love the way music speaks to me.
The way it touches my soul in places that nothing else can.
For years I've felt the music within me and for years I've wondered where it came from.
Both of my parents may be musically inclined, but if that is the case neither of them acted upon it.
My brother is very much into music too. Which makes me think we had to of gotten it somewhere along our gene pool.
I love the way it swiftly moves my mood from one extreme to the other.
How it can perk me up or even sometimes bring me down.
I grew up loving soulful jazz and hearty gospel music.
I've now been introdued (thanks to Big D) to Country and Rock.
I love it all.

I have been desperately searching for some new tunes. Especially those that will keep me pumped while out walking. Now that the weather is perking up a bit, I am too.

If you have ANY suggestions at all, trust me when I say I am into EVERY genre of music, please share.

Rock On.

cloth diapers for sale

Ok. So my last sale fell through. Not her fault! Definitely mine...well the post office's. This time I will not make the mistake of trying to sell the whole lot to just one person! If you would like to buy them all that is fine, It will just cost more shipping because I will be unable to package every single diaper together in a manner that is acceptable to the post offices standards. (long story).
Anyways.
Here is what's up for grabs tonight. I have a TON more to add later on, but this is what I had access to before Oreo went to bed.

All prices Include shipping!
Pictures can be seen HERE!

To make things easier I created a google docs form for you to let me know what you would like, this way I don't have to worry about who asked for what first. If you have questions about a diaper I created a blank for that too. If you would like me to send an invoice to your paypal account just include your pay pal address in the last question listed on the form. No payment would be received until you approve it! I just thought this would make it a little easier and also help me keep track of where I'm sending things! Thanks so much~ :o)

where do you go?

I have three types of friends right now.
1. The still in college sorority sisters. (focused on a degree, boys, partys, and studying)
2. The newly engaged crew. (focused on wedding planning)
3. The newly divorced moms. (focused on freedom and major feminism)

Notice I'm not in any of those? I stand alone through this journey of a newly wed mother. It's hard to make time for the friends listed above, and to be honest they don't seem too interested since Oreos (LL's) arrival. I like imagining a world where we are all at the same time and point in our lives. Having a coffee while the kiddies play and we chat about husbands and the latest baby trends. I'm not sure where to turn to find this? Do I venture off and find a new group of friends while I wait for the ones listed above to catch up and settle into where I'm at now? Who know's where I will be at that point...probably at my sons high school graduation! I will then be sitting there wishing they also had kids that just left for college and need a shoulder to lean on. Big D often asks me why I love blogging so much, and I always reply with "they are the only mom's I have to talk to." It's so true. Aside from my amazing mother that I spend every open minute of my life with (happily I might add)! You ladies are the only mommy support I have! So where do you turn to find your mommy fix? Did your friends have kids at the same time as you, or are you stuck like me?!

iHeart Faces constructive feedback Friday

The iHeart Faces website is having a Constructive Feedback Friday where they have non-amateur photographers post feedback about your photo. I love this shot I got of LL enjoying his first Oreo, but am bummed that I've been unable to edit it to its highest potential. I just recently started using Adobe Photoshop CS4 (today) can we say confusing?! I am hoping I get my post up on their McLinky so I can get some great tips on how to fix this cute photo up! I'd like to get rid of the dark bottom right corner. Maybe smoothe the couch in the background out. Brighten his eyes up a bit. Any suggestions would be so very much appreciated!

Here is the original Shot:

we are TTC

It is official. We are TTC. I can now post away about our journey because everyone in our family now knows. Trust me, it was not easy to tell them. To be honest this was one of the most difficult decisions of my life. Family means everything to me, and I hope at the end of this they understand why we made the choice we did. I thought it would be easy to conceive, but as it turns out it really takes time and lots of work. I am already stressing about it and we are only 4 cycles in. I have always been an impatient person but this is just killing me. I am going to try a special diet recommended by Subfertile Frugalistas Miracle doctor. I've been looking to changing my diet for quite some time and I feel like this diet is exactly what my body needs. I am also going to begin charting online using FertilityFriend. I'm not going for any doctor assistance until I feel like we've tried everything that we are able to try ourselves. I will keep you all updated during my journey and if you have any tips, tricks, or advice please share!

kidorable review and giveaway

This is the perfect time of year to review such a cute and functional product! Kidorable has created the most stunning rain gear for children that I have ever seen. When I stumbled across the website and began browsing I found the cutest Pirate's set. I love anything pirate and just had to have it for the little man. We received the pirate rain boots and rain coat from the "My First" collection. I was very impressed by the detail that even their website photos cant capture! The gold buttons on the jacket, the cute eye patch that velcros on and off, the vibrant colors, the hood that is made to look like a pirates hat... it was all so perfect! The boots fit perfectly but since little L is short the sleeves were a bit long. We have this problem with just about any piece of clothing. I'm hoping this means we get to use it for a bit longer, maybe into next spring! When the little man had it on he would run around the house flipping the hat off and on. He also wore it while I read him his new Pirate bedtime books, while he wore his pirate diapers. See, I told you I'm pirate obsessed! How can I not be when they make such cute products like this!

best bottom diapers review and giveaway- Nicki's Diapers

This diaper RoCkEd. We have been using it at nighttime pretty much since we got it. I am madly in love with the cover. The leg gussets work wonders holding in all of LL's duties, and he wakes up with no elastic markings on his chubby legs. I am also very impressed with the slim fit of the inserts. They look really bulky, and work like really bulky ones, but LL's Pj's still fit just fine! If you are a cloth diapering mama you know how exciting it is to find a diaper that can hold up during bedtime. It is such a bummer to wake up to a mess as I'm sure it annoys LL as well! Poor baby has to wake up in it! Well not anymore, with our new Best Bottom Diaper we have steered clear of any nighttime mishaps and I am full on all day and all night cloth diapering. Such an accomplishment I think! Definitely give this diaper a try, it truly is fantastic!

Straight From The Source:
Best Bottom Features:

After years of experience, Nicki the owner of Nicki's Diapers created a new diaper taking the pros of all the different diapering systems and eliminated the cons. This resulted in the Best cloth diaper system available - trimmest fitting and highly absorbent! To help reduce early confusion and that overwhelmed feeling when researching cloth diapers, the Best Bottom diapers has simplified cloth diapering while making one of the most economical systems. The Best Bottom one size diapering system is not a pocket diaper, not an all in one, not a fitted diaper and not a prefold system...it is the best of all types!

How Does The Best Bottom System Work:
Simplify, simplify, simplify! Many may start researching cloth diapers, get overwhelmed and quit. Best Bottoms are YOUR solution! So easy to use yet comes with lots of options so you can get a customized system for your baby.

1. Adjust front snaps to achieve the size needed.
2. Snap insert into diaper.
3. Put diaper on baby and go!
4. When baby needs a diaper change snap out soiled insert and snap clean one in.
5. Put diaper on baby and go AGAIN. The Best Bottom shell is wipe-able and can be used multiple times before washing but you may want to air dry between uses but it is not necessary.

We recommend getting as many shells as your baby poos in a 2-3 day time period (for newborns count how many explosions they have!!). We have found that poo does stay on the insert most of the time but in some cases it may not (but it will stay in the diaper cover avoiding an embarassing mess!) Three different size inserts in several different materials available. We don't believe in a one size insert. Newborns and toddlers are not the same size so in order for a one size insert to absorb enough for a toddler it will be HUGE on a newborn. You may not need all three sizes of inserts and can skip the middle size - it is all up to you! We recommend approximately 24 inserts per size.

So to make it SIMPLE you will need approx 8-10 shells and 24 inserts per size. How easy is that?!

Fit:
Fits from birth to 35+ lbs. We added special leg gussets to help keep everything in, adjustable rise with four settings, and overlapping closure in both snap and hook & loop. This is a very trim fitting diaper so please be extra careful that none of the insert is sticking out of the shell. Also, after the diaper is on, pull the leg gussets out around baby's legs. This will guard against leaks and help avoid any red marks.

Choice:
Available in both snap and hook & loop as well as yummy colors inspired by ice cream! We are starting with 5 colors but will be adding more soon. Available now are Mint Chocolate Chip, Vanilla, Strawberry Shortcake, Blue Moon, and Chunky Monkey. We have taken great care to use color coordinating snaps for a great looking diaper.

Quality:
The highest quality of materials available have been selected with as much of the raw materials made in the USA as we could find. The entire Shell is made with USA-made materials! ALL of our products are proudly handcrafted in the USA at local factories helping to support the local economy and reduce our environmental impact. We use durable snaps and hook & loop, double layer of waterproof PUL creating a perfect no-leak sturdy shell with a wipe-able inside lasting for many washes.

dr. bloom's chewable jewelry review and giveaway

This is such a great innovative creation! This dentist mommy thought up creating jewelery out of safe material that is okay for baby to chew on. Genius! The little man I nanny for is a gummer. He nibbles and gums on just about anything his tiny little hands can grasp! He is full on teething! When I heard about these I knew they would be perfect for the little guy. We reviewed the combo set (Turquoise Beach) and a bracelet set (Green apple/Turquoise Beach). It went perfect with about 90% of my outfits, and it was comfortable to wear. I took some really cute pictures but unfortunately I forgot to ask his mommy if it was okay that I posted them. Definitely not a boundary I want to cross! If she says yes when I see them on Monday I will post them for you all to see. He absolutely LOVED them. Little L was never a fan of putting anything in his mouth (except my boobies to nurse!!). When he say baby w with these new exciting pieces of mommy's jewelry in his mouth he just had to have a taste for himself. He actually sat there and held it towards his back molars and nibbled away. I couldn't believe it! It must have felt amazing because he seemed pretty content after giving it back. Which I might add you want to make sure you have a wipe or burp cloth handy to dry the jewelery off when baby is done, because they aren't very courteous about giving it back dried!
